What Happens During Accident Recovery

During accident recovery, the crew first secures the scene, then assesses the vehicle, loads it safely — often with a winch or crane — and transports it to your chosen destination. IM Logistics Service Ltd provides 24/7 accident recovery across the North West. Call 07725 943641.

Being involved in a collision is stressful enough without wondering what happens to your vehicle next. Accident recovery follows a clear process — scene safety, assessment, loading and transport — and knowing it in advance takes one worry off your mind. Here is what to expect.

Scene Safety Comes First

When our crew arrives at a collision, the first job is making the scene safe: positioning the recovery vehicle to shield the working area, setting out cones and beacons, and checking for hazards such as leaking fuel, deployed airbags or unstable loads. If the police are present, we work under their direction — they control the scene and decide when vehicles can be moved. Your job at this stage is simple: stay where the crew tells you and let them work.

Assessing the Vehicle

Before anything is moved, the crew assesses the damage: which wheels are intact, whether the steering and suspension will allow a straight lift, whether airbags or sharp bodywork pose a risk, and whether fluids are leaking. This decides the loading method. A car with a smashed corner but rolling wheels loads very differently to one with a collapsed suspension or a locked drivetrain.

Loading the Vehicle

Most accident-damaged cars are winched onto the recovery truck bed, which keeps the damaged areas untouched and avoids dragging. Where a vehicle cannot roll at all, skates or a crane may be used. The crew will secure it with straps at the correct points — never through a damaged wheel or a bent suspension arm. It looks slow and deliberate because it is; rushing a damaged vehicle causes secondary damage.

Where the Vehicle Goes

You choose the destination: your home, your usual garage, an insurer-approved repairer or a secure storage location. If the police need the vehicle held for examination, it goes to their designated compound and we will explain that clearly. Tell the operator your preferred destination when you call 07725 943641 so the accident recovery is planned around it from the start.

Insurance and Paperwork

Keep the recovery paperwork — it records the collection point, time, mileage and condition, all of which your insurer may ask for. Take photos of the damage before the vehicle is loaded if it is safe to do so. You do not need to have your insurance sorted before we attend; recovery and the claim are separate processes, and we will not hold your vehicle waiting for an insurer decision.

If the Car Is Undriveable but the Scene Is Calm

Not every accident is a major collision — a low-speed shunt can still leave a car with a burst radiator or a wheel pointing the wrong way. If everyone is unhurt and the vehicles are clear of traffic, treat it as a standard recovery: hazards on, photos taken, details exchanged with the other driver, then call for recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to call the police before calling for accident recovery?

If anyone is injured, the road is blocked, or you suspect the other driver is uninsured or has left the scene, call 999. For minor damage with everyone safe and vehicles clear of traffic, you can call recovery directly. When in doubt, call the police first. For 24/7 accident recovery in the North West, call 07725 943641.

Will recovery damage my car further?

A professional crew works specifically to avoid secondary damage — winching rather than dragging, strapping at correct points, and assessing the vehicle before it is moved. Some accident damage makes any movement risky, and the crew will explain the approach before loading. For careful accident recovery, call 07725 943641.

Can you store my car if my insurer has not decided yet?

Yes. If your vehicle cannot go straight to a repairer, we can take it to a secure location until your insurer or chosen garage is ready. Discuss the destination when you call so it is arranged from the outset. For accident recovery with flexible destinations, call 07725 943641 any time.

What details should I exchange after an accident?

Swap names, addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and insurance details with the other driver, and note the time, location and weather. Take photos of the scene and damage if safe. Never admit fault at the roadside. Then call 07725 943641 and we will recover your vehicle wherever it needs to go.
